Brunel Manor

The redevelopment of Brunel Manor is grounded in the legacy of Isambard Kingdom Brunel and his original vision for a residence harmoniously integrated with the surrounding landscape. The design seeks to restore the grandeur of the Manor and reimagine the wider site as a collection of sustainable homes that sit sensitively within the historic grounds. This is underpinned by six guiding principles:

  1. Landscape Maintenance & Preservation

  2. Manor Restoration & Renovation

  3. Sustainability, Health & Wellbeing

  4. Woodland Row Proposal

  5. Water Row Proposal

  6. Adaptability for Flexible Living and Accessibility

Manor House
The Manor House will undergo a respectful restoration, removing incongruous 20th-century extensions and reinstating its original proportions. Seventeen apartments will be sensitively integrated within the listed fabric through carefully considered “pod” insertions. These new elements are purposefully contemporary, clearly distinguishable, and designed to sit lightly within the historic context, avoiding damage to original coving, skirting, and other period features. This light-touch approach celebrates the original architecture while allowing for modern, functional living spaces.

Woodland Row
Nestled into the wooded edge of the site, Woodland Row comprises sensitively designed, contemporary three-bedroom homes. The materials respond to the woodland context—stone and timber—transitioning as the homes deepen into the landscape. Each unit offers flexibility for future living, with ground-level adaptability and options for stair lifts, supporting long-term accessibility in line with the sixth key design principle.

Water Row
Located on the elevated portion of the site, Water Row homes enjoy expansive coastal views. Each unit is tailored to its orientation, with variations in window placement and detailing. Functional rainwater management is celebrated as a design feature, linking architecture with landscape. These sustainable homes reflect Brunel’s original vision of innovation and contextual harmony.
